Dell Management Plug-In for VMware vCenter

Dell recently released their new Management plugin for VCenter. This is a great tool for an environment that is using Dell servers, as I do.

Some of the features I particularly like are:

  • Template based server provisioning
  • Workflows for provisioning servers
  • BIOS updates via VCenter
  • Virtual Appliance based deployment

It is very exciting to see all the vendors placing data center features in "off the shelf" applications for all types of users.

Amazon EC2 Adds Import Feature For VMware Images

I just ran in to an announcement regarding importing of VMware images (vmdk) to Amazon EC2.

As of today, it looks like only Windows Server 2008 images can be imported. What is interesting is that Amazon also mentions that a VSphere Client plugin is on the way that will allow users to import virtual machines in to the Amazon Cloud.

The page can be found here.

Equallogic Firmware Upgrade Fails With Error Regarding Free Space

I have run in to this situation a few times when upgrading Equallogic firmware. This error means there is not enough space in the directory used for firmware files. This usually means there are troubleshooting files (.dgo) or old firmware files hanging out in this directory. Although the .dgo files are small in size, it could still prevent the update from happening because of needed space.

To remedy the issue, simply ftp in to the IP address of one of the member's network interfaces and list the contents of the directory with the 'ls' command. From here, you will see a list of files in the directory. Firmware update files end in .tgz and if there are older firmware files in there besides the version you are trying to upgrade to, you can simply delete it with the 'del' command, or:

del kit_V4.3.5-R115269_2153195738.tgz (Old firmware update packages)
del SegXX.dgo (Troubleshooting files)

From here, simply try to update again using telnet/ssh or the Group Manager and you should be set. I personally like doing upgrades via ssh, there is a lot more diagnostic output that you see in the CLI vs the Group Manager.

VMware Customization Errors With Linux Guest Operating Systems

Recently, I ran in to an issue regarding customization scripts with Redhat and Ubuntu. Using the guest customization feature for a Linux guest, I noticed that after the virtual machine booted, none of the customizations like IP, hostname, etc. were applied.

After digging around in the VMware tools logs directory, I noticed the following error in /var/log/vmware-imc/toolsDeployPkg.log:

Failed to load /usr/lib/ /usr/lib/ cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

It appears that the library is not placed or symlink'd in /usr/lib, it actually resides in /usr/lib/vmware-tools/lib32/

Simply creating a symlink fixes the problem:

ln -s /usr/lib/vmware-tools/lib32/ /usr/lib/
